Oral health is an essential component of overall health, with physiological, functional, emotional, and social implications. However, it remains a neglected aspect within public health systems, particularly in countries with structural inequalities such as Honduras. This article examines the relationship between oral and systemic health, the psychosocial effects of tooth loss, and their connection to quality of life, especially among vulnerable populations. It presents data from international studies supporting the links between oral diseases and systemic pathologies, as well as the impact on self-esteem and daily functioning. Finally, it proposes strategies from the university–society engagement function of the National Autonomous University of Honduras to promote a comprehensive and equitable approach to oral health.
