Brief History of the Journal
The Faculty of Spatial Sciences (FACES from its name in spanish) at the National Autonomous University of Honduras was created by the University Council in April 2009, in recognition to the work of the Suyapa Central American Astronomical Observatory (OACS from its name in spanish), which had been operating for the previous decade. It is organized into the academic departments of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Geographic Information Science and Technologies, Archaeoastronomy and Cultural Astronomy, and Aeronautical Sciences. A department is the basic and fundamental academic unit of the University, bringing together a community of faculty members specializing in a specific field of knowledge, who work collaboratively in teaching, research, community outreach, advising, and academic administration.
Since its inception, FACES has prioritized scientific research as one of its most important academic activities. Consequently, all faculty members in its departments participate in and develop scientific research projects, which are included as part of their academic duties, collaborating with national and international research groups.
In 2009, the scientific output of the FACES professors was evident, so the Research Directorate of UNAH devoted an entire issue of the Journal Ciencia y Tecnología, Number 4, Second Period, June 2009 (ISSN: 1995 – 9613) to publishing the results of the scientific research projects carried out by the OACS now Faculty of Spatial Sciences, as a recognition of their effort and the systematic integration of research into university academic work.
Thus, the motivation to publish a journal for the Faculty of Space Sciences was already in place. In 2009, coincident with the International Year of Astronomy, the Ciencias Espaciales journal was created at FACES. This would be a biannual publication, with the first issue of the year, called Spring, devoted to the scientific output of the different fields of knowledge studied at FACES; and the second issue, called Autumn, devoted exclusively and on a rotating basis to one of the fields belonging to the Faculty.
